This graduate program is intended to socialize nurses into a variety of educator roles. Potential employment opportunities for graduates include: academic faculty member; hospital-based educator, clinician, or leadership roles; community health agencies, private industries, as well as entrepreneurial activities.

The nursing education major is a 36 credit hour program. The plan of study provides in-depth knowledge about curriculum, instruction, assessment & evaluation in addition to coursework that further develops your clinical skills. The coursework also supports matriculation into a doctoral program. The curriculum is based on The National League for Nursing’s Core Competencies for Nurse Educators.

Dr. Michelle Byrne

MS-NE Coordinator

Students may enroll in 1-3 courses per semester. The curriculum is designed so that a student may progress full time through four semesters of study, or at an individualized part time pace to complete the program.  Classes are scheduled on one day per week (either Tuesday or Thursday) with WebCT enhancement. Therefore, home internet access and proficient computer skills facilitate success and communication with professors and peers. The face to face class time incorporates active teaching strategies that make possible advanced group process skills and peer collaboration as well as many opportunities for public speaking and presenting. The final two semesters require clinical hours (1 credit/4 hour) and therefore some additional days may be required for clinical and teaching practicums.  Preceptors include both academic and clinical nurse educators who hold advanced degrees and have substantial experience in nursing education.

Post masters students may also obtain a Post masters certificate in nursing education. This program is 15 credits in length and classes are also taught one day per week.

The program coordinator, Dr. Michelle Byrne holds MS and PhD’s in nursing education. She embraces contemporary pedagogy and transformative leadership styles. After reviewing the materials, if you have further questions or would like to speak to current and past students, please contact the coordinator of MS Nursing Education Program, Dr. Michelle Byrne at mmbyrne@ngcsu.edu or at 706-864-1652. Or contact Ms. Pat Walden, staff assistant at pdwalden@ngcsu.edu or 706-867-2800.
Fall semester is the start date for a new cohort, but ongoing admissions will be considered based on seat availability. Therefore you are encouraged to apply whenever you decide to make a change in your professional life.
